Phase Converters are used to produce three phase power from a single phase power source. These converters have become very popular in the last decade with more and more three phase equipment being made for industrial and home use. The reason for the increased use of three phase equipment and motors is because they are more efficient, less expensive and more reliable than single phase equipment and motors.

One of the main reasons phase converters are used so widely is purely economics.  The utility company usually provides residential homes and businesses with single phase power.
