Voltage
Transformers
There are three different
types of voltage transformers, low voltage, medium voltage
and high voltage. We will discuss each one of these later.
However, to understand the differences, you will first need to understand what a
transformer is and how it works.
Transformers are electrical devices, which step up or step
down incoming voltage at input sources. This is done by transferring energy from
one circuit to the other through the magnetic core. These windings
are termed primary and secondary windings. An electromagnetic field
goes through a process of expanding and collapsing around the
conductor. This process changes the induced current with the formation
of an output from the secondary coil, which either steps up or steps
down the input voltage.
A good example of the use of a voltage transformer is when
there is a piece of equipment that has a voltage of 110 Volts AC.
If
you are in a country where the main power supply is 220
Volts AC, you will need a step down transformer to run your
equipment.
What is the difference between a converter and a transformer? Both are
electric conversion products that enable you to run electric
devices in different parts of the world. If the device you are using
is a high power heating element or mechanical motor such as a hair
dryer or iron, you will need a converter. But if your device is a
computer, a printer or a VCR, you will need a transformer.
When purchasing a voltage
transformer, always look for a quality manufacturer with experience
in building quality
transformers. We recommend ACME or
TEMCo Transformers.
They offer quality transformers combined with a staff of
expert engineers and technical support people to help you select the right transformer for your application.
Low Voltage Transformers:
One of the most popular uses of low voltage transformers are
in the applications of landscaping. Typically, they are designed to reduce 120
volts to an output voltage of 12 volts. It is important to understand
that transformers can not stabilize voltage variations. They simply
transfer the current at a fixed ratio and do not sense changes.
Medium Voltage Transformers:
Voltage transformers are usually connected directly to
a primary distribution circuit and usually step down the voltage.
There are many different types of medium voltage transformers such
as liquid-filled,
convention dry type and cast coil just to name a few.
High Voltage Transformers:
These voltage transformers are usually used in power
transmission applications used by utility companies. They also
are used in microwave ovens. It is said that these transformers
are the “muscle” of the microwave. With a 120 VAC applied to the
primary windings, the high voltage transformer steps up the primary
voltage to a very high electrical current. This high voltage is then boosted
even higher by the capacitor and diode.
Always remember, when
purchasing a voltage transformer, seek out a more
reputable and experienced manufacturer such as
Acme
Transformers . A quality manufacturer will save you money in
the long run and will provide you with many years of quality service. |
